A Note on Ritual and Scale…

I fear that some people will think an impulse towards ritual is totalitarian. It might conjure up thoughts of mass rallies and parades. Few things could be further from the truth. The value of ritual lies in balancing the significance of the group and the significance of one person. In fascist and communist states it tends to emphasise the former on a scale that perverts the limited nature of communities and suppresses the essential nature of individuals. It is ritual for people who do not like people.
