In Praise of Bias…

We sometimes talk as if “bias” is a bad thing. It can be. If I want to answer a purely factual question, for example, bias may be an impediment. Yet the fact that we are biased suggests that it has been advantageous, and in many cases it continues to be. Think of all the businesses that would have been abandoned if their owners were not in the grip of optimism bias. Think of all the husbands and wives who would not endured bad patches had they not been so committed to the sunk cost fallacy. Think of how much worse your past would seem if not for the fading effect bias. All biases are problematic, of course. Yet a truly valuable rationality should sometimes not oppose but harness them. This would help to keep it human.
