On the whole Overton Window thing, it’s often underestimated how extremists who have no realistic chance of directly having any real political influence help less radical adherents of their ideology that might even openly despite them by giving them someone to look reasonable in comparison to. For example, I think it is by American historians today pretty accepted that the Civil Rights Movement in 1960s America probably wouldn’t have become as influential if they didn’t have the Black Panthers/Nation of Islam crowd to look moderate next to. Wouldn’t be surprised if the Andrea Dworkin/Valeria Solanas “reduce the male population with 90%” served the same function to the women’s liberation movement in the 1970s.

Right-wing examples would probably be the John Birch Society giving Barry Goldwater someone to look moderate next to, and Goldwater later doing that to Ronald Reagan in turn.

Good point! I suppose the Alt-Right sort of performs that function with Trump. What is interesting about Corbyn is that he is almost as radical as the British left gets! (With the exception of the dregs of the Stalin Society, perhaps…)

It’ll be one wild ride if Corbyn becomes PM when Trump is POTUS. I can’t think of any more surefire recipes for the UK-US relationship totally disintegrating.
